A24 unveils the horrors of dabbling with the occult in the trailer for festival favorite Talk to Me, an upcoming summer horror event slated for theatrical release on July 28, 2023.

Talk to Me marks the feature directorial debut of twin brother filmmakers Danny and Michael Philippou, best known for their popular and sometimes controversial YouTube channel, RackaRacka.

Move over Ouija boards, the newest occult party game is here...

The brutal terror unfolds when "a group of friends discover how to conjure spirits using an embalmed hand; they become hooked on the new thrill until one of them goes too far and unleashes terrifying supernatural forces."

Sophia Wilde, Miranda Otto, Alexandra Jensen, Joe Bird, Otis Djanji, and Zoe Terakes star.

Mit dem australischen Geister-/Besessenheits-Horror-Streifen "Talk to me" legten die für ihren erfolgreichen YouTube-Kanal "RackaRacka" bekannten Zwillingsbrüder Danny und Michael Philippou 2022 ihr Spielfilm-Debüt vor: Creepy-atmosphärisch, effektiv und brutal in den Momenten, in denen es drauf ankommt, mit einem Minimum an CGIs realisiert sowie gut gespielt und handwerklich kompetent in Szene gesetzt. Vom Stil her unterscheidet sich der Film merklich von dem sonst üblichen Output/Stil der Philippous - was man natürlich als "konventionell" oder "auf Nummer sicher gegangen" ansehen könnte... allerdings ändert das nichts daran, dass sie alles in allem eine der besten Genre-Veröffentlichungen des Jahres abgeliefert haben.

Danny Philippou: We actually shot an entire Duckett prequel already. It's told entirely through the perspective of mobile phones and social media, so maybe down the line we can release that. But also while writing the first film, you can't help but write scenes for a second film. So there's so many scenes. The mythology was so thick, and yeah, if A24 gave us the opportunity, we wouldn't be able to resist. I feel like we'd jump at it.

Klingt vielversprechend. Vor allem der Umstand, dass die Vorgeschichte inszenatorisch anders angelegt ist und damit zugleich weiter an einem zentralen Motiv von "Talk to Me" arbeitet; wenn dann noch ein Trilogie draus wird, deren letzter Teil nochmals einen anderen Zugang findet, mit dem man das gleiche Feld beackert – und das böte sich hier sehr gut an –, wäre das großartig. (Hauptsache, man wiederholt sich nicht und schielt nicht stärker in Richtung konventionellerer Teenie-Horror-Konventionen...)
