The global nuclear war turns the planet into a dessert battlefield. In an area called "Avalon (f)", three beautiful female assault hunters: Gray (Meisa Kuroki), Lucifer (Rinko Kikuchi) and Colonel (Hinako Saeki) are hunting for giant sand whales called Sunakujira.
Gray pilots a fighter plane, Lucifer is a sorcerer who can transform herself and Colonel is a woman fighter equipped with a rifle gun. The sand whales have multiple eyes that can move through the volcanic ash and the hunters use both land and sky to fight with these monsters.
The main feature in this virtual reality game is to battle out with Madara Sunakujira, the biggest giant sand whale and the "Game Master" (Ian Moore) watches the players from the air and reminds Gray to cooperate with Lucifer and Colonel to overpower Madara. Will Madara gets defeated in the end?
Next is the final showdown battle between man and woman; between Gray and Jager (Yoshikatsu Fujiki). Who will win this crucial battle?

Gute Nachricht für alle, die sich Mamoru Oshiis Assault Girls gerne mal genauer anschauen würden, aber den Griff zur teuren, am 23. Juni erscheinenden Japan DVD und Blu-ray Disc scheuen.
Nippon Cinema berichtet, daß das US Label Well Go USA Oshiis Knarren-und-Mädels-Show mit Meisa Kuroki, Rinko Kikuchi und Hinako Saeki am 19. Oktober auf DVD veröffentlichen wird.
Im Gegensatz zur japanischen Fassung wird es dort auch englische Untertitel geben. Eine Blu-ray Disc Fassung wurde nicht angekündigt, obwohl Well Go USA bereits mehrere BD Titel auf den Markt gebracht hat. Mamoru Oshiis Assault Girls ab Juni auf DVD & Blu-ray Disc
Geneneon Entertainment Japan hat angekündigt, Assault Girls Mamoru Oshiis quasi-Fortsetzung von Avalon am 23. Juni auf DVD und Blu-ray Disc zu veröffentlichen. Für beide Medientypen wird es eine Standard- und eine Special Collector's Edition geben, wobei letztere neben dem Hauptfilm eine Bonusdisc mit diversem Promomaterial auch die Vorgänger Assault Girl (Oshiis Beitrag zu True Female Tachigui: The Amazing Lives of the Fast Food Grifters) und Assault Girl 2 (aus der Kiru ~ KILL Kurzfilmsammlung) enthält. Zudem gibt es ein 92-seitiges Storyboard und ein etwas dickeres (16 statt vier Seiten) Booklet.

Nur mal als Hinweis, der Film ist wirklich grottenschlecht und bocklangweilig (und ich mag AVALON). Man merkt dem Film an, dass Regisseur Oshii keine wirkliche Ahnung von Online-Games hat, die er mit diesem auch überraschend dummen Streifen offenbar kommentieren wollte. Einzig Kenji Kawais Score ist mal wieder ausgezeichnet.
