While China is traumatized by military cliques during the Warlord Era in the 1920s, Shanghai is the cynosure of all eyes. People see it as both Hell's Kitchen and Heaven's Gate. One of the city's most memorable heroes has to be Chen Zhen, who single-handedly avenges his mentor's death by killing all the Japanese at a dojo in Hongkou, only to be showered with bullets while making his legendary flying kick. Vanished from the public eye ever since, he has been taken for dead though his body is never found.

Seven years later, a wealthy entrepreneur called Koo returns from abroad and makes a grand entrance on the Shanghai social scene by befriending the notorious mafia boss of the city. This mysterious man is none other than Chen Zhen in disguise who dwells in a world of nefarious means in order to infiltrate the criminal empire. He soon discovers a clandestine collusion between the mafia and the Japanese.

Disguised as a caped crusader at night, Chen sets out to dismantle with his martial arts skill the evil collusion that plagues the country. One of his foremost missions is to ferret out the assassination list prepared by the Japanese.

"The Legend of Chen Zhen" is a martial arts film set to continue the television series "Fist of Fury" first done by Donnie Yen in 1995. The character role was originally made famous by our beloved actor Bruce Lee in the 1972 film "Fist of Fury" seconded by Jet Li in 1994 "Fist of Legend".

Chen Zhen is a legendary Chinese martial artist who struggled against the Japanese during their occupation in China. He was actually a fictional creation of writer-director Lo Wei who based the character on the infamous real-life student of martial arts master Huo Yuan-jia, the same master portrayed by Jet Li in "Fearless".

The story of Chen Zhen in the "Fist of Fury" and "Fist of Legend" ends in him faking his own death after he was showered with bullets when he discovered and took avenge of those behind his mentor's death. He goes away and lives his life in hiding for the people to have peace. In this upcoming movie, the story continues as Chen Zhen returns to Shanghai after 7 years and disguises himself as a mysterious wealthy businessman from abroad.

He befriended a notorious mafia boss and the Japanese to penetrate the criminal underworld.  At night, he disguises as caped crusader to find the Japanese's assassination list and fight the evil connivance that is pestering the country.

Filming is currently being done in Shanghai and is projected to wrap up by March 2010.  It will be theatrically released on October 1, 2010, Hongkong.

Die komplette Serie glaube ich nicht, aber vielleicht die Tai Seng Version, so ähnlich wie bei "The Legend of Bruce Lee".

In an interview with The Bund, Donnie Yen describes the rendition of his role in Legend of Chen Zhen as an enhanced version of Bruce Lee's Chen Zhen, "The Chen Zhen that I'm portraying will carry traces of Bruce Lee's shadows, his sentiments, his deportment. I hope to pay tribute to him. At the same time, I'd also incorporate my own ideals, and fighting styles, you can say that this is Bruce Lee's Chen Zhen completely re-imagined, and elevated.



Donnie Yen Making New Moves for Return of Chen Zhen

Donnie Yen writes on his blog on Sina saying that it's no mean task achieving a breakthrough in the choreography in Legend of the Fist: Return of Chen Zhen, considering how many such productions were made. There wasn't a moment when his mind wasn't filled with thoughts on plotting out the action scenes and the moves, and he even suffered from insomnia during the shoot as a result.

Nunchaku, flying kick at the Japanese dojo are obligatory, and taking a bold move, he combines Jeet Kune Do with MMA, before infusing them into creative, yet practical combat elements, and hopes to pay tribute to Bruce Lee through this. There is no task that cannot be accomplished, as long as one has the determination and willpower. And he gained a major inspiration prior, during and after the shoot.

After slimming down in Ip Man, he had to gain back his weight in a short time, as well as toning his muscles for the Chen Zhen. To keep himself in tip-top condition, he would get up an hour earlier to do push up. Can a 46 years old be as fit as a 31 years old? Yes, Donnie Yen is glad to say that, he did it.

In terms of acting, Donnie Yen has to completely put down Ip Man's humble, scholarly, gentlemanly grandmaster, to play a complex character with multiple identities - a roguish, unrestrained nightclub boss by night day, a righteous Black Mask by night, while in reality, he is a hot-blooded revolutionary.

The character Chen Zhen was originally played by bruce Lee in the Fist Of Fury and then brought back to life in Jet Li's Fist Of legend, so bringing another action superstar to the film isn't any suprise. The Return of Chen Zhen is set during Japanese-occupied Shanghai, seven years after the events of the series.

Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen will be set seven years after the apparent death of Chen Zhen, who was shot after discovering who was responsible for his teacher's death (Huo Yuanjia) in Japanese-occupied Shanghai. A mysterious stranger arrives from overseas and befriends a local mafia boss. That man is a disguised Chen Zhen, who intends to infiltrate the mob when they form an alliance with the Japanese. Disguising himself as a caped fighter by night, Chen intends to take out everyone involved as well as get his hands on an assassination list prepared by the Japanese.

Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen will be released theatrically on 23rd September, 2010.

American fans of kung-fu will not have to wait too much longer before they get to see Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen.

According to a recently released press release, Wells Go USA has bought the American distribution rights to Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen.  Wells Go USA is a company that normally specializes in DVD releases and has recently been expanding its Asian movie titles as seen by the recent release of IP Man, Samauri Princess, and now this upcoming title.

Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen is a continuation of the mid 90s Hong Kong television series entitled Fist of Fury, which was based upon the 1972 classic martial arts film by the same name starring Bruce Lee.

Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen is directed by acclaimed film maker Andrew Lau (Infernal Affairs) and stars Donnie Yen (IP Man, Hero) in the titular.  It takes place seven years after the events in the television series, and it picks up when a mysterious stranger arrives and becomes close with the local mafia.  Unfortunately for the mob that mysterious stranger is Chen Zhen who plans to infiltrate the mob.  Zhen disguises himself as a caped crime fighter by night and has the intention to find an assassination list so he can put a stop to the mobs nefarious intentions.

Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen will be making the rounds on the festival circuit this fall and its Hong Kong Premiere is slated for September 23, 2010.  Well Go USA is planning an American theatrical debut of the film in the Spring of 2011.

Dragon Dynasty sprang neben Well Go USA auch auf den BluRay-Zug auf.
Ip Man wurde schon ganz ordentlich, genau wie Fist Of Legend.
Weitere Titel sind dann fuer Herbst angekuendigt, ich freu mich schon.

Stört eigentlich keinen dieser anti-japanische Grundton? Ich dachte, darüber sei man im HK-Kino hinweggekommen... Ich sehe Donnie Yen eigentlich sehr gerne, aber diese tendenziös angelegten Handlungen verderben mir solche Filme recht leicht :icon_confused:

Hm, auch wenn ich deine Meinung teile, Hedning, so ist es dann doch nicht wirklich etwas, was mir den Sehgenuss verdirbt.
Die Zeit in der der Film spielt, ist ja doch nur ein Aufhaenger fuer einen weiteren Donnie Yen-Reisser.  ;)
Wenn ich als HK-Regisseur einen Film drehe, der zu der Zeit spielt, dann koennte ich es mir wahrscheinlich auch nicht verkneifen, anti-japanische Elemente einzubauen. Die Animositaet zwischen ihnen ist ja definitiv noch gegeben, wenn auch nicht mehr so stark.
Ich denke naemlich, dass sie andererseits definitiv Schelte dafuer ernten wuerden, wenn sie die Japaner zu "brav" darstellen wuerden.

Presumed dead after single-handedly defeating all the Japanese fighters at the Hongkou Dojo to avenge his master, Chen Zhen joins the Labour Corps during the First World War. Deciding to return home to defend his country, he arrives in Shanghai disguised as a wealthy businessman named Qi. He quickly befriends the notorious mafia boss Mr. Liu (Anthony Wong), owner of the nightclub Casablanca, and Kiki (Shu Qi), the club's star hostess. With the rapid expansion of Japanese influence in China, the military releases a death list, sending Shanghai into complete panic. As assassinations become rampant in the city, Chen disguises himself as the Masked Warrior to protect those who have been targeted.

LEGEND OF THE FIST THE RETURN OF CHEN ZHEN after confirming to be the September Venice International Film Festival's opening film also has become the Toronto International Film Festival's Special Recommended Film.

The film continued to break into various international market, but the film company still valued the local market as it released various film related items for fans to collect at the talk of the town Book Fair and Comic Book Festival. The 12 inch model was made on July 27, Donnie Yen's birthday. The first print was limited to 1000 sets and will officially be available on July 30 at the comic book festival. The figure would be either in a white Zhongshan suit or a black leather jacket, eye patch and hat. Both costumes were Chen Zhen's most representative costumes. The accessories included a pair of black boots, four pairs of interchangeable hands and classic nunchukus. The cost was HK$980. Chi Tan was rather pleasantly surprised when he saw the model and said that it looked 90% like him. He already ordered ten sets for his collection.

Konnte den film gestern sichten und bin immer noch überrascht über die Qualität des Films.

Zuerst mal das wichtigste, die Actionszenen:

Der absolute Oberhammer!!! Alleine die Eröffnungssequenz lässt einen mit offenem Mund auf der Couch sitzen.
Was Donnie Yen hier vom Leder zieht wurde so noch nicht gesehen, nebenbei: der Film ist sehr hart!
Absolut heftig wozu der Mann mit 46 noch in der Lage ist.
Vom Kampfstil ist es ein Donnie Yen Mix der letzten Jahre, die Kämpfe sind zum Teil upgespeeded wie bei Legend of the Wolf, dann gibt es MMA inkl der schwingenden Fäuste aus Flashpoint, größten Teils WT Einlagen inkl. der Kettenfaustschläge am liegenden Mann und zu guter Letzt Jeet Kun Do inkl Bruce Lee Kampfschrei.

Also an Martial Arts wird einem einiges geboten, so dass alle auf ihre Kosten kommen sollten.

Die Story sowie Schauplätze sind komplexer als es den Anschein mag und ähnlich querbeet gemixt wie die Kampszenen ansich. Kriegsschauplatz, Bruce Lee Dojo, Black Mask Verbrechensbekämpfung, Musical-Chicago-Casino Style usw..
Die Musik ist für einen HK Film sehr ungewöhnlich gewählt worden, passt aber in den Gesamteindruck des Films.

Für die die eine Kampfszene im Dojo, sowie kleine Unstimmigkeiten gibt es 1,5 Punkte Abzug, daher 8,5/10.

Unbedingt anschauen, Leute.

Ich hab's heute morgen nur schnell überflogen. Wenn ich mir das natürlich jetzt nochmal genauer anschaue, dann gebe ich euch recht.

Um nicht ganz offtopic zu sein: Ich freue mich schon riesig auf den Film. DVD kommt ja am Donnerstag raus. Muss ich also gleich morgen noch bestellen. *freu*

Im O-Ton kann ich den mir nicht geben :( - hoffentlich wird das was bis Frühjahr.

Hab ihn nun auch gesehen und ich bin leider enttäuscht. Oder anders ausgedrückt, die Erwartungen wurden irgendwie nicht erfüllt.

Der Film geht phänomenal los, nimmt aber leider immer weiter zum Ende hin ab. Die kurzen Fights zwischendurch machen Spaß, aber die "Story" dümpelt so irgendwie vor sich hin und das, worauf alle Fans am meisten warten, enttäuscht leider auf ganzer Linie. Der Endkampf ist so dermaßen lustlos und unübersichtlich inszeniert, dass man irgendwie keine Lust mehr hat zuzuschauen. Ist der Film an sich doch relativ rar mit Kampfszenen, freut man sich auf das Ende - und wird dann fallen gelassen.

Ich würde ihm ne 5/10 geben wegen dem genialen Anfang und den coolen, kurzen Fights zwischendurch. Mehr aber auch nicht.

Danach erstmal Undisputed 3 geschaut, DAS hat wirklich gerockt  !

Muss leider zu großen Teilen Facehugger zustimmen. Zu wenig Action und die teilweise einfach zu unspektakulär umgesetzt. Auch dem Endkampf fehlt das gewisse Etwas. Schade, denn den Charakteren und der Geschichte werden genügend Zeit eingeräumt und es gibt auch die eine oder andere interessante Entwicklung. Aber wie gesagt, der Action fehlt was. Gebe dem Film 6/10.

Hoffentlich ist Reign of Assassins da besser.

Dem schließe ich mich an: zu spärlich gesäte, wie unspektakuläre Kämpfe, dafür durchaus ordentliche Schauwerte bei den Kulissen. Allerdings hatte ich nie das Gefühl, dass Chen Zhen eine besondere Rolle in der Geschichte zukam, vom Ende einmal abgesehen. Enttäuschend.
