Donnie Yen to Transform Himself into The Monkey King

With the box office success of Donnie Yen's films in the past 2 years, such as the most recent Ip Man 2 which has just passed the 200m yuan mark in China, not only Donnie Yen, who is currently filming The Lost Bladesman (Guan Yun Chang) and just finished a fight scene with Andy On, is highly sought after by filmmakers and investors alike, but he's also getting a big, fat pay cheque.

Filmko CEO Alex Wong announces that Donnie Yen would be playing the eponymous character Sun Wu Kong in The Monkey King, budgeted at 300m yuan and shot in 3D IMAX. Alex Wong, who would not reveal the actual pay Donnie Yen is getting, says, "Donnie Yen is certainly worthy of the salary of 20m yuan that he commands, he is such a huge box office draw."

This has been confirmed by Donnie Yen's manager, "The role of the Monkey King is a big challenge to Donnie Yen, and something worth trying out, and Donnie Yen is very confident in handling the role well."

Presently only Monkey King Sun Wu Kong is confirmed. 12 other main characters remain to be filled up, including Bull Demon King, Princess Iron Fan, Jade Emperor, Ancient Ancestor Bodhi, Erlang Shen, Nezha, etc. Apparently, Chow Yun Fatt and Louis Koo would also be onboard.

Building the fantasy sets is a costly affair, with around 50m yuan being allocated. The Water Curtain Cave and Mountain of Fruits & Flowers will be shot on location in Zhang Jia Jie, Hunan. Production begins in November, with a proposed release in Feb 2012. Following that, Donnie Yen would be teaming up with Tony Jaa in a co-production with Thailand in 2011.  Sina, HK Headline

Monkey King: Wreaking Havoc In Heavenly Palace will star hong kong legend Donnie Yen and will also be shot in 3D, directed by Soi Cheang.

Edmond Wong (The writer of the Ip Man) will be given the role to write this also, with the movie due to start filming around october.

Zhang Jizhong the producer says, "We'll begin with the first instalment, so, we'd need US$100m rather than a total sum of US$300m, this will be an international co-production, part of the funds would come from bank loans, another from US, Japan and Korea. Based on current situation, we have no problems securing the funding."

This was said, as they plan to make a trilogy of the Monkey King, also alot of movies are getting 3D releases these days, so lets hope this movie stands out from the rest.

The roles still left to be fill include Buffalo Demon King, Princess Iron Fan, Jade Emperor, and Erlang Shen. Lets hope they bring in a few more famous faces to the film, a good choice for Donnie Yen trying something different. The character of the Monkey King was also used recently by Jet Li in the movie The Forbidden Kingdom, a role he played well.

The movie is set for a 2012 release.

Chow Yun Fatt als Jade Emperor

The Monkey King, produced by Filmko, directed by Cheang Pou Soi, has begun production in Beijing on October 8. Apart from Donnie Yen who is taking on the title role as the Monkey King Sun Wu Kong, Chow Yun Fatt is playing the Jade Emperor who rules over the realms of Deities, Humans and Demons, Aaron Kwok is playing Bull Demon King, who fights against the Heavenly Palace for the sake of love, so that his wife Princess Iron Fan, played by Chen Qiao En, and child could return to Heavenly Palace, while Mo Xiao Qi and Wang Yuan Yuan are taking on the roles of fairies Zixia and Caiyun, and He is playing Erlang Shen.

In this new twist on Journey to the West, the young, hotheaded and impressionable Sun Wu Kong, who aspires to become an immortal, is duped by his newly acquainted friend Bull Demon King into wreaking havoc on the Heaven Palace, forcing the Jade Emperor to retaliate.

Reportedly, The Monkey King's budget has been raised to 400m yuan, out of which 40m yuan go into Chow Yun Fatt's pocket, while Donnie Yen takes home 26m yuan and Aaron Kwok 8m yuan. Filming will take 5 months, followed by 15 months of post-production, before being released in summer 2012. The Beijing News, Sina
