ZitatJackman Talks Wolverine 2, Confirms Aronofsky
Source: Vulture, October 19, 2010

Hugh Jackman talked to Vulture about Wolverine 2 and in doing so, confirmed that Darren Aronofsky is directing.

"I'm starting; I'm having my six meals a day," he said about the preparations.

With Aronofsky directing, this will not be a usual "X-Men" movie. "This is, hopefully for me, going to be out of the box. It's going to be the best one, I hope," he said, "Well, I would say that, but I really do feel that, and I feel this is going to be very different."

He added that he doesn't think Aronofsky's penchant for dark drama is at odds with the big-budget franchise. "This is Wolverine. This is not Popeye. He's kind of dark," Jackman said. "But, you know, this is a change of pace. Chris McQuarrie, who wrote 'The Usual Suspects,' has written the script, so that'll give you a good clue. [Aronofsky's] going to make it fantastic. There's going to be some meat on the bones. There will be something to think about as you leave the theater, for sure."

können sie von mir aus stecken lassen.

2 Sachen haben mir den Spass am 1. Teil versaut.

Eric

Also ich fand alle X-MEN Streifen und Ableger eigentlich bisher recht gelungen.

Der Film wird "the Wolverine" heißen, eigenständig sein und (somit) kein Sequel von "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" werden.

ZitatDirector Darren Aronofsky revealed the title on Saturday for the new Wolverine movie starring Hugh Jackman. The movie, to be titled The Wolverine, will not be a sequel to the Gavin Hood-directed X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Aronofsky told HitFix that The Wolverine will be a "one-off," or standalone project.

The script, written by Christopher McQuarrie, involves Logan beginning a forbidden romance with a Japanese woman whose hand in marriage is, unfortunately, promised to another man. Since Logan won't take "no" for an answer, it puts him into battle with her father and her samurai-sword-wielding brothers.

Was zum Geier? Wolverine gegen Samurai? EPIC!

ZitatAronofsky had long been wanting to do a new movie based on the long-running Japanese manga series "Lone Wolf and Cub" by Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima, and being that The Wolverine is based on the Frank Miller mini-series and is mainly set in Japan, we wondered whether he might be able to get some of what he wanted to do with that movie out of his system with the new Wolverine flick.

"There's all the samurai elements that are really exciting," he told us. "I'm a big fan of Japanese movies, we're going to try to have a good time." Aronofsky confirmed that he'll be casting a lot of Japanese actors, but is still unsure whether they'll be speaking in Japanese or English. "It's still under discussion, we'll see what happens," he said about that.

Not everyone was a fan of Gavin Hood's previous movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which partly suffered from nearly half a dozen writers (not all credited) being involved with the screenplay, but clearly, this movie should be different going by what we were told. "Chris McQuarrie wrote a great screenplay. We're trying to get it into a slightly better place but he's working on it, and I think it'll be easy to fix. Chris is an amazing writer and I'm very lucky to have him as a collaborator."

The thing to remember is that Aronofsky's main focus for the next three months will be making sure people go to see his new movie Black Swan, and because of that, he hasn't spent a lot of time on developing The Wolverine just yet. "Literally, we haven't even started to gear up. I'm at the same studio and the film comes out December 3, so they know I'm busy until then," he said.  A press release from 20th Century Fox about their new deal with Aronofsky's production company Protozoa stated that filming would start in April.

Our one less-than-subtle attempt to find out if Liev Schreiber might make a cameo as Sabretooth, something we asked the actor about earlier this year, was met with a quick rebuff of "I'm not going to talk about any of that stuff."

Some may remember that Aronofsky was at one point developing a Batman movie with Frank Miller, and The Wolverine will be his first attempt to direct a studio franchise film. We wondered about how that experience may have differed from this one and he told us, "I was really trying to make 'The Fountain' at the time and that's what I was doing so I wasn't very focused on (Batman), I was focused on making 'The Fountain,' and then after that, they went off and made the film that they did and it's great."

Darren Aronofsky No Longer Directing The Wolverine
Source: 20th Century Fox / ComingSoon.net, March 17, 2011

Darren Aronofsky and Twentieth Century Fox today issued the following statements about the director's involvement in the movie, The Wolverine.

Stated Aronofsky: "As I talked more about the film with my collaborators at Fox, it became clear that the production of 'The Wolverine' would keep me out of the country for almost a year. I was not comfortable being away from my family for that length of time. I am sad that I won't be able to see the project through, as it is a terrific script and I was very much looking forward to working with my friend, Hugh Jackman, again."

Stated Twentieth Century Fox: "While we are of course disappointed that Darren can't do 'The Wolverine,' we also understand and respect his reasons. Having done both 'The Wrestler' and 'Black Swan' with Darren, we know he is an extraordinary talent and we look forward to working with him on other projects in the future. Hugh Jackman and Fox both remain fully committed to making 'The Wolverine.' We will regroup and move forward aggressively."

Potentielle Regisseure und ein Kurzfilm...

Variety claims to know the studio short list for directing candidates. The current options are said to be:

Jose Padilha (Elite Squad, the upcoming RoboCop reboot, the just-announced Tri-Border.)
Doug Liman (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, The Bourne Identity)
Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, Brooklyn's Finest)
Mark Romanek (One Hour Photo, Never Let Me Go)
Justin Lin (Fast Five, Better Luck Tomorrow)
Gavin O'Connor (Miracle, Pride and Glory)
James Mangold (Walk the Line, 3:10 to Yuma)
Gary Shore (primarily television commercials)

Bleeding Cool has uncovered an interesting connection between candidate Gary Shore and The Wolverine in the form of a short film entitled "Wolverine vs. the Hand", released three months ago on the director's Vimeo page:

http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=78082

As you can see in the player below, "Wolverine vs. the Hand" appears designed to showcase Shore's talents specifically in the X-Men world and even ends with the title X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2. The short was likely a spec pitch and has no official connection to 20th Century Fox though, if Shore's name has, indeed, made it this far, the studio is probably happy with what they see.

James Mangold On His Plans For The Wolverine
Source: The Playlist, October 29, 2011

His The Wolverine set to go before cameras next year, director James Mangold spoke with The Playlist about his plans for the sequel to the 2009 box office hit X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

"It's a kind of adventure following such a unique character also in a really unique environment," he says of his reasons for taking the job. "I mean, the fact that half of the characters in this movie speak Japanese, this is like a foreign-language superhero movie that's as much a drama and a detective story and a film noir, with high-octane action as it is anything like a conventional tentpole film."

Mangold also explains that he's discussed the project with the formerly-attached Darren Aronofsky and that, while the film still features Christopher McQuarrie's screenplay, he and Mark Bomback have gone through and rewritten the entire thing, comparing the version he plans to make to classics like The Outlaw Josey Wales and Chinatown.

"[It's] much more about Logan getting lost in this very unique and insulated world of Japanese culture, gangster culture, and ninja culture," he explains. "The fighting is going to be unique because it's all influenced by Japanese martial arts... I think more than anything, it's a character piece, asking really interesting questions that are what pulled me in about what it means to be immortal. What is it to live forever, when you lose everyone you've ever loved? Either you watch them get killed, or you just lose them by attrition. What is it to feel the burden of saving mankind through all of its mistakes, over and over and over again. What's the toll it takes on you as a living being that is somehow living this Frankensteinian, eternal life?"
