Serious news in the world of horror tonight as it is being reported that Moustapha Akkad the man behind the Halloween franchise was one of those injured in the recent bombings in the Middle East. The news gets worse as his daughter Reem is listed amongst the casualties of this tragedy. The LA Times reports:

    A branch of the Al Qaeda network led by Abu Musab Zarqawi, whose insurgents in Iraq have directed numerous attacks on U.S. soldiers and Iraqis, claimed responsibility today for the suicide bombings at three Western hotels here that killed at least 57 people and wounded more than 100.

    In an Internet posting that could not be independently verified, Al Qaeda admitted responsibility for the Wednesday bombings, according to the Associated Press.

    Meanwhile, hundreds of protesters gathered outside one of the three U.S.-based hotels in Amman, denouncing Zarqawi, the Al Qaeda-affiliated Jordanian-born militant.

    President Bush today condemned the bombings, and pledged support for its ally in the war on terrorism.

    "The killings should remind all of us that there is an enemy in this world that is willing to kill innocent people, willing to bomb a wedding celebration in order to advance their cause," Bush said from the White House, shortly before meeting with President Ali Abdullah Saleh of Yemen, another Middle East ally.

    Wednesday's attack, which killed at least one American, bore the "hallmarks of Al Qaeda," White House spokesman Scott McClellan said today. But he added that no conclusions have been drawn over who carried out the attacks that shattered Jordan's status as an oasis of relative calm in the Middle East.

    Jordan's Deputy Prime Minister Marawn Muasher told reporters last night that although it was too early to tell for sure, he believed Zarqawi was "obviously the prime suspect."

    The blasts struck the Grand Hyatt, Radisson SAS and Days Inn in the Jordanian capital just before 9 p.m., sending clouds of black smoke billowing into the sky and leaving some of the bloodied victims lying on plush-carpeted floors.

    At the Radisson, an assailant detonated an explosives belt in the midst of a wedding party in a crowded banquet hall, resulting in extensive casualties, officials said. At the Days Inn, a car bomber was unable to breach the security perimeter outside the hotel before detonating his explosives, Muasher told reporters.

    Emergency workers rushing to the scenes used bellman's carts to carry the wounded out of the hotels. The flood of victims overwhelmed hospitals.

    A surgeon at Istiqlal Hospital reported "bodies coming left and right." Sixteen corpses were placed in a single room and dozens of the injured were in danger of dying, the surgeon said.

    One American was among the dead, an unnamed official from the State Department told the AP today, without releasing the victim's name. One American was said to be severely injured and another remained in the hospital.

    The majority of victims were Jordanian civilians. The injured included Moustapha Akkad, the internationally famed Syrian-born film director of "The Message" and "Lion of the Desert." Akkad's 30-year-old daughter, Reem, died in one of the blasts.

    Reuters quoted a French U.N. official as saying, "I was eating with friends in the restaurant next to the bar when I saw a huge ball of fire shoot up to the ceiling and then everything went black."

    The U.S. Embassy was advising Americans in Amman to take what the spokesman called "common sense" precautions such as "avoiding large crowds and keeping a low profile."

    The Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported that Israelis staying at the Radisson on Wednesday had been evacuated before the attacks and escorted back home "apparently due to a specific security threat."

    Amos N. Guiora, a former senior Israeli counterterrorism official, said in a phone interview with The Times that sources in Israel had also told him about the pre-attack evacuations.

    "It means there was excellent intelligence that this thing was going to happen," said Guiora, a former leader of the Israel Defense Forces who now heads the Institute for Global Security Law and Policy at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. "The question that needs to be answered is why weren't the Jordanians working at the hotel similarly removed?"

    After the attacks, Jordanian security forces were placed on high alert, deploying throughout the capital around hotels, embassies and malls. The Jordanian government sealed off the borders and announced that all government and public offices would be closed in mourning today.

    Jordan's King Abdullah II condemned the attacks, calling them criminal acts committed by "a misled and misleading group."

Moustapha Akkad, the Syrian-born producer of the "Halloween" horror films, died Friday from wounds sustained in the triple hotel bombings, a hospital official said.

Akkad died at 7:30 a.m. in a Jordanian hospital where he was being treated, said surgeon Dr. Yousef Qisous. He lived in Los Angeles and was reportedly in his 70s.

"He had bleeding in the lungs, his ribs were fractured and he died of his wounds and a severe heart attack this morning," Qisous told The Associated Press. 

Akkad's daughter, Rima Akkad Monla, 34, also died in one of Wednesday's three explosions, said her mother, Patricia Akkad, Thursday.

A woman who answered the telephone at Moustapha Akkad's home early Friday said she was too upset to talk. A telephone message left at Patricia Akkad's Los Angeles area home was not immediately returned. She left for Lebanon late Thursday.

Three suicide bombers hit the Grand Hyatt, Radisson SAS and Days Inn hotels in the Jordanian capital, Amman, Wednesday night and killed at least 59 people, including the three suicide bombers.

Officials suspect Iraqi involvement in the attacks, which were claimed by al-Qaida's Iraq branch.

Moustapha Akkad, best known for producing all eight films in the "Halloween" franchise, also produced and directed "The Message" (1977) and "Lion of the Desert" (1981). Both latter films starred Anthony Quinn.

His daughter, Rima, grew up in Los Angeles an avid polo player who graduated from the University of Southern California in 1995 with a degree in international relations.

She pursued a master's degree in Middle East studies at the American University in Beirut, where she met her husband Ziad Monla, 35.

Her husband's family owns the Monla Hospital in Tripoli, Lebanon. The couple, married for six years, has two sons, ages 2 and 4.

"Rima is a totally American girl," Patricia Akkad, 64, said Thursday in a phone interview from her ex-husband's home in Los Angeles. "Here's an American who was over there and innocently killed for no reason."

Akkad said her daughter loved living in Beirut.

"We all know the problems in the Middle East, and you never think it's going to touch you," she said.

Funeral services were scheduled for Friday in Tripoli.

"She was the light of everybody's life," Patricia Akkad said. "She put everybody else first."

Das sehe ich schon etwas anders. Tatsache ist jedenfalls, dass den Anschlägen vom 11.September keine wie auch immer geartete "Anstachelung" vorrausging und die Terroristen dieser auch gar nicht bedürfen. Solange es Menschen gibt, die einzig ihre Auslegung des Glaubens als alleingültige Wahrheit anerkennen und jedem Andersdenkenden das Lebensrecht absprechen, wird sich an der Problematik auch nichts ändern.
Bin Laden hat ja unlängst nicht nur den am Irakkrieg beteiligten Staaten gedroht, sondern auch beispielsweise Deutschland und Frankreich. Hier geht es um viel mehr - nämlich um die Werte, die wir mit Amerika teilen. Den politischen Pluralismus, den Laizismus, Menschenrechte usw....all dies wollen die Terroristen zerstören und ihren eigenen Gottesstaat nach Talibanvorbild, am besten gleich weltweit, etablieren. Solchen Zeitgenossen ist nicht mit Entwicklungshilfe und sonstigen Maßnahmen beizukommen, hier ist hartes Durchgreifen gefordert.
Natürlich stehen auch die islamischen Staaten in der Pflicht, seit Jahrzehnten überfällige Reformen zu verwirklichen und damit endlich die Unzulänglichkeiten von Politik und Gesellschaft zu beseitigen, welche durch die zunehmende Perspektivlosigkeit vieler Jugendlicher eine Art Nährboden für die Botschaften der Radikalen bilden.

Sehe ich nicht so, und die Sache die Tom Highway da schreibt steht auch nicht in direktem Zusammenhang, den ich gemeint habe... OK, mein Post war etwas platt und wahrscheinlich auch etwas abwegig vom Thema, aber ich bleib dabei dass der soganannte War on Terror von Mr Bush genau das Gegenteil ist, seitdem haben die Terroranschläge rasant zugenommen, das kann man nicht verneinen...

Bitte versteht mich nicht falsch, ich will hier niemanden extrem in die Sch3!sse ziehen oder positiver darstellen, das ganze ist mir oft zu einseitig und in einer Situation in der man sich verblendeten Islamisten gegenübersteht hilft es kaum, wenn auf der anderen Seite ein ebenso verblendeter Bibel-Cowboy mit Ölsucht steht. Die Gefahr schaukelt sich hoch...

Ich bleibe auch dabei, dass ich nicht vor den Terrorfuzzis Angst habe und würde mich freuen, wenn man denen nicht so eine grosse Platform in den Medien geben würde...

Jetzt muss ich doch mal sehr grinsen...
Ich find die Leute wirklich lustig, die sich hinstellen und Demokratie für den Nahen Osten fordern - oder auch für China, wenn wir dabei sind. Was dabei nicht bedacht wird, ist, dass es dann nach den ersten freien Wahlen radikalislamische Regierungen im ganzen Nahen Osten gäbe - denn das ist genau das was die Leute da wollen. Ich wage mal zu behaupten, das sowas den westlichen Interessen nicht gerade dienlich ist. Als Beispiel dafür braucht man nur den Irak zu betrachten, dessen neue Verfassung ja ne reine Farce ist.
Wenn man diesen Gedanken weiterspinnt, dann müßten diese demokratischen Regierungen dann auf Konfrontationskurs mit Israel gehen - auch darin ist sich die Mehrzahl der Araber einig. Und was das bedeutet, kann sich jeder selbst ausrechnen.
 
Zum Thema Bush habe ich übrigends letztens ein interessantes Bonmot gelesen: Jemand hat seine und bin Ladens Reden verglichen und herausgefunden, dass da weitgehende Übereinstimmung herrscht. Beide tätigen im Prinzip dieselben Aussagen "Kampf gegen das Böse..." usw. Ich guck mal, ob ich noch finde wo das war.
